Late March to mid April is cherry blossom season, all pink petals and picnics, and it is peak everything: book eight to twelve months out. November's autumn leaves are just as beautiful and slightly saner. May, early June, September and October are lovely, green and less crowded. Winter brings snow monkeys, powder snow and blissfully quiet temples. August is hot and humid but festival-rich.
The practical magic
