The difference is in the details we sweat so you never see them: the room categories chosen by view, the guides picked by personality as well as knowledge, the driving days kept short and scenic, the restaurant bookings made months out. Tailor made does not mean unprotected, either. Every trip is fully ATOL protected, with financial security wrapped around the whole itinerary.

On an escorted tour you travel with a group and a set itinerary. A tailor made tour is private: just you, travelling your own route with private guides where they add magic. Some clients combine both: a small group tour bookended with tailor made days.
Almost anywhere, honestly. Vietnam, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Tanzania, Costa Rica, China, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Indonesia, Iceland and Europe are all favourites, and each has its own guide or holidays page on this site if you want to read more.
For big tailor made trips, six to twelve months ahead is ideal, especially for peak seasons like Japan in cherry blossom or safari in the dry season. That said, we have built wonderful trips in a fortnight. Ask; you might be surprised.
